"House of the Sky" — Celestial fusion with ancient earth
At St. Regis Kanai, the sacred Pleiades constellation—birthplace of the ancient Maya— descends from the celestial sphere to dance with a 400-year-old mangrove forest. This is yūgō at its most profound: where cosmic mythology fuses with living nature to create architecture that transcends mere building.
The 620-acre ancient mangrove is not a backdrop—it is the soul of the design. Over 2,000 precast concrete pylons elevate buildings above the forest floor, allowing natural water flow and root systems to thrive undisturbed. The resort breathes with the mangrove, creating cascading water features, reflecting pools, and teak walkways that hover respectfully over this living ecosystem.
Caribbean light filters through white translucent screens, casting star-shaped shadows that migrate across surfaces as the sun travels—architecture becoming a timekeeper of natural rhythms.
The Maya understood the universe as three synergetic worlds: the earthly soil where they lived, the mystical cenote underworld where they prayed, and the celestial Pleiades where their souls were born. This cosmological worldview became the architectural blueprint.
Each circular building represents one star from the Seven Sisters constellation. The site plan is literally the Pleiades pulled to earth—a sacred geometry that honors the Maya's belief that they descended from these stars. This is cultural respect manifested in form.
For over a millennium, the Maya navigated by the Pleiades, planted crops by its rise, and held ceremonies honoring these stars as their celestial home. "House of the Sky"—the resort's Mayan name—directly references this ancient astronomical tradition.
The fifteen-meter white screens echo the latticed facades of colonial Mayan architecture while transforming them into luminous vessels. At night, they glow softly from within, becoming terrestrial stars that mirror the heavens— a poetic conversation between ancient sky-watchers and contemporary guests.
The architectural design mirrors the Pleiades by pulling the stars of this sacred constellation down to a 400-year-old mangrove. Circular rings representing each individual star create the seamless setting for floating buildings, boardwalks, and plazas.
Raised teak walkways hover delicately, connecting multiple casual and formal amenities strategically dotted over this enchanting ancient mangrove. Carefully composed restaurants, bars, beach clubs, pools, library, gym, and spa work in concert, providing a unique holistic guest experience.
Celestial Light Play: White translucent screens along corridors and building facades filter sunlight during the day, casting star-like shadows on interior architecture. In the evening, a magical transformation occurs when these fifteen-meter screens glow softly, revealing the terrestrial circular star representation of the celestial Mayan world.
Sensory Experience: Curved walkways, grand covered open-air spaces, double and triple-height great halls, and screen-clad corridors guide guests through a journey of discovery. Extensive cascading water, reflecting pools, lush native trees, and textural hardwood lattice screens provide subtle audio and visual reminders of the connection between celestial and earthly worlds.
Preserving the lush mangrove forest was the paramount priority. Innovative construction techniques minimized environmental impact:
